This project is a modernized port of Ultima III: Exodus, rebuilt in TypeScript from the source code of LairWare’s Macintosh port of the game, which was released as open source back in 2014. It runs in any current web browser, installs as an offline web app, and is also packaged for Windows, Mac OS, Linux, Android and the Steam Deck. The port keeps the original game’s data files untouched, and includes LairWare’s full set of period tile sets: Apple II in colour and mono, Commodore 64, NES, CGA, EGA, MCGA, VGA, the Ultima V style, and Macintosh black-on-white. A new tile set is also included.

The game’s default Standard experience adds a Controller mode inspired by the NES version, playable with a gamepad, keyboard, or touch screen. It also adds an auto-map that fills in as the party explores, a quest journal with in-game hints, a shared inventory for unequipped gear, gear comparisons in shops, new art and sound, and optional difficulty adjustments. The original gameplay, including classic difficulty, keyboard commands and the original skins, remains available from the Pause menu. The game saves automatically at every town, castle and dungeon entrance.

ChangeNode built the port with the help of the Claude AI model. You can see a video detailing how he went about it on his YouTube channel.
